Thanks to the efforts of bird watchers, the list of birds on the Kola Peninsula is constantly growing, and currently it includes 270 species. Of these, 178 species nest in the region, 71 species fly into our region. The rest (about 20 species) are found either during spring and autumn migrations, or during migrations. The nature of the residence of several species (harrier, little gull, long-tailed owl and wren) remains unclear. It is quite possible that in some years they multiply here.

The list is compiled on the basis of materials from the site Nature of the Murmansk region and "Resources of waterfowl in Russia. Estimates of the number for the area" Kola Peninsula "www.biodat.ru

  • Description and habitat

Herbalist (Tringa totanus) inhabits the coasts of the seas and off the shores of shallow water bodies, including swamps and flooded meadows. This slender wader is characterized by its long, red legs.

    Nutrition and reproduction

Feeds on herbalist various invertebrates (insects, worms, molluscs, crustaceans). With its long beak, it combes shallow water in search of prey. The herbalist's nest is usually well hidden in dense vegetation and is very difficult to find.

The female lays from three to five (and more often four) eggs, which both parents incubate for four weeks. Together they take care of the chicks, until the young ones are on the wing. Chicks quickly leave the nest and begin to fly after three weeks.

    Spread

The herbalist is found throughout Europe and lives off the coasts of the seas and off the shores of shallow bodies of water, including swamps and flooded meadows. In winter, herbalists often migrate to warmer southern or coastal regions.

    Reproduction

At the age of two, herbalists reach puberty and nest from April to July in the same place. The nest is a recess in the ground and is well hidden in dense vegetation. The female lays three to five eggs, which are incubated by both parents for four weeks. Chicks quickly leave the nest and begin to fly after three weeks. The herbalist is a rather rare bird and is endangered.
